In times of increasing hybrid work, many employees are asking themselves whether going to the office is financially worthwhile. The latest “State of Hybrid Work Report 2024” from Owl Labs provides surprising insights into the actual costs of a day at the office.
The reality of hybrid work in 2024
According to the report, 64% of German employees now work in a hybrid model – an increase of 13 percentage points from last year. Only 30% still work exclusively in the office, while 6% work entirely remotely.
The true cost of an office day
One of the most surprising findings of the report: an average office day costs employees in Germany a whopping €29. By comparison, a home office day costs just €9 – a difference of €20!
The costs break down as follows:
1. Commuting (fuel or public transport)
2. Catering (lunch, coffee)
3. Work clothes
4. Parking fees
The trend towards “coffee badging”
In view of these costs, it is not surprising that many employees tend to “coffee badge” – they briefly appear at the office to show their presence and then continue working from home.
What employers can do
To attract employees to the office despite the costs, companies should create attractive incentives:
1. Free meals
2. Travel allowances
3. Flexible working hours
4. Improved office equipment
Flexibility is the key
The “State of Hybrid Work Report 2024” clearly shows that employees value flexibility. 23% would even quit if they didn't have flexible work options. Companies would be wise to take this into account and promote hybrid work models.
The future of work lies in a balance between office presence and remote work. Employers who understand this and take the needs of their employees into account will be ahead of the competition for talent.
